Wildfire west of Nordegg classified as ‘being held’

A Central Alberta wildfire remains classified as “being held” at 480 hectares, Alberta Wildfire stated on Sunday.

A Central Alberta wildfire remains classified as “being held” at 480 hectares, Alberta Wildfire stated on Sunday.

The wildfire, discovered on July 19, is located 19 kilometres west of Nordegg.

There are 70 wildland firefighters currently working on this wildfire. Two unit crews are from B.C. Wildfire, and two firetack crews, one unit crew and one helitack crew are from Alberta Wildfire.

An Incident Management Team from Alberta Wildfire is managing the response to the wildfire. The crews are assisted by four helicopters.

Firefighters continue to work on building a containment line around the wildfire’s perimeter. Helicopters are supporting firefighters with bucketing operations.

Helicopters may be scooping water from Goldeye Lake – residents and visitors are asked to be aware of this and allow them space to work.

The evacuation alert has been lifted for Centre for Outdoor Education, Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area, Frontier Lodge, Goldeye Centre, Goldeye Lake PRA and surrounding areas.

Haven Road remains closed to the public to allow for safe firefighting operations.

Since Jan. 1, there have been 43 wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area which have burned 518 hectares. Since Jan. 1, there have been 742 wildfires in Alberta which have burned 105,722 hectares.

A fire advisory is currently in effect for the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area due to current and forecasted weather conditions.

The fire advisory will remain in place until conditions improve.
