Wildrose party pitches sweeping measures to improve government accountability

Alberta’s Wildrose party says Premier Jim Prentice needs to make sweeping changes in upcoming accountability legislation to restore faith in government.

EDMONTON — Alberta’s Wildrose party says Premier Jim Prentice needs to make sweeping changes in upcoming accountability legislation to restore faith in government.

Opposition leader Danielle Smith says a specific ministry is needed to oversee government travel and hosting expenses.

And she says the government must remove barriers to freedom of information requests and deliver more power to independent officials such as the auditor general.

Prentice is expected in the coming days to table a bill to toughen up government accountability and end entitlements.

He promised the legislation after scandals over lavish spending forced former premier Alison Redford from office.

He has already promised to sell the fleet of government airplanes that the auditor says was abused by Redford for personal jaunts.
