A wind warning is in effect for the City of Red Deer and most of Central Alberta.

Wind gusts of 90 km/h are expected to develop this morning and continue into the afternoon.

A wind warning is issued for 70 km/h or higher of sustained wind and/or gusts to 90 km/h or more.

No reports have come in yet of significant damage within Red Deer, but a downed power pole on Riverside Drive has left some residents in the dark.

Red Deer Electric Light and Power crews are replacing the pole.

Jim Jorgensen, Electric, Light and Power manager, said some businesses in Riverside Light Industrial and the Lions Campground will be without power for most of the day.

Riverside Drive between 48th and 46A Avenues has been blocked off while crews work. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes.

The lights went out around 6:40 a.m. in surrounding neighbourhoods, including Riverside Meadows and Clearview.

Power has since been restored to these areas.

Crews are also securing a leaning power pole on Johnstone Drive.

The CentreFest kickoff barbecue planned for City Hall Park was cancelled earlier on Friday. CentreFest festivities on Saturday and Sunday are expected to go ahead as planned with a forecast of sunnier weather.
