A two-day preliminary hearing is set for the late fall for a woman charged with assaulting a newborn.

A two-day preliminary hearing is set for the late fall for a woman charged with assaulting a newborn.

Shannon Deschamps, 32, of Hobbema had her hearing set for Nov. 3 and 4 after her lawyer appeared in Red Deer provincial court on Tuesday.

Patty MacNaugton said later she has asked for four witnesses at the hearing, which will be held to determine if there’s enough evidence to warrant the accused stand trial in Queen’s Bench.

Deschamps, who is charged with aggravated assault, elected earlier to be tried by a Queen’s Bench justice sitting alone.

She was charged in late November in Red Deer after a newborn infant was brought to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Nov. 29 with suspicious injuries.

The injuries weren’t life-threatening but were consistent with a physical assault, police said.
