A large amount of disclosure evidence prompted the lawyer of a woman charged with assaulting a newborn to adjourn her case until mid-February.

A large amount of disclosure evidence prompted the lawyer of a woman charged with assaulting a newborn to adjourn her case until mid-February.

Shannon Deschamps, 32, of Hobbema reserved her plea on aggravated assault until Feb. 17 when her lawyer Patty MacNaughton appeared in court Wednesday.

MacNaughton said she recently received the police disclosure and needs more time to review it before entering a plea on Feb. 17 on the behalf of Deschamps. The accused wasn’t in court.

Deschamps was charged with aggravated assault after a newborn infant was brought to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre in late November with suspicious injuries. RCMP said then that an investigation into child abuse allegations was launched shortly after the child was taken into hospital on Nov. 29.

The injuries weren’t life-threatening but were consistent with a physical assault, police said.
