Woman drowns while canoeing near Rocky

Rocky Mountain House RCMP and Rocky Mountain House EMS responded to a call regarding a drowning victim near the Horburg Recreational Area about 30 km west of Rocky Mountain House at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Witnesses and EMS administered CPR but were unable to revive the woman.

An ongoing investigation has determined the woman and a man were canoeing on the North Saskatchewan River throughout the day.

The pair was nearing their destination when they came across a set of rapids. The canoe began taking on water before capsizing after hitting a rock.

The male, who was wearing a life-jacket, was able to swim safely to shore.

The female was not wearing a life-jacket and became caught in the river. She was located unconscious near the river bank.

The investigation is ongoing.
