Woman killed in wreck near Rocky Mountain House

A 51-year-old Rocky Mountain House woman was killed Thursday morning when her car collided with a tractor trailer just south of the town.

A 51-year-old Rocky Mountain House woman was killed Thursday morning when her car collided with a tractor trailer just south of the town.

Ellen Featherstone was driving northbound about 7:25 a.m. when her car crossed the centre line and slammed into the rear wheels of the southbound truck’s trailer about three km south of Rocky.

The force of the impact ripped the back wheels of the trailer off, said Rocky RCMP Sgt. Chris Matechuk. “The tractor stayed on the road and the trailer without the wheels went into the west ditch. The car subsequently came to rest in the east ditch.”

Featherstone, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Rocky Mountain House hospital, where she died of her injuries.

The man driving the truck was not injured.

Speed and weather were not a factor in the accident, said Matechuk, who arrived at the scene only a couple of minutes after the accident on his way into work.

“It was foggy prior to the accident. But the accident site was clear.”

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
