Birchmans Pereira of Red Deer was a dominant force in the world powerlifting championship in Paris, France, in early November. Pereira broke three European records while winning gold in his age class. He holds world records in squats, 272 kg (600 pounds) and deadlift, 261 (576 pounds) in his age and weight classes. Pereira, who has won gold in five straight world championships, also holds the Canadian, North American and European titles.
