Ice jam cleared

Al Bidyk of the City of Red Deer Public Works department searches for a 43rd Street catch basin at the entrace to Rotary Park, in order to use pressurized steam to free the basin and its underground drain of ice Tuesday morning. The icy drains and the partially blocked underground Waskasoo Creek culvert at 49th Avenue were cleared, allowing for 43rd Street’s re-opening later in the day.

A count Saturday at the Medicine Lake Ski Hill near Bentley showed very few at the hill were wearing helmets, despite the recent death of actress Natasha Richardson, who died of head injuries after falling at a Quebec ski hill. She was not wearing a helmet. Here, waiting for the lift is Marc Adrian, 15, and friend Chris Scott 15, both from Sylvan Lake. The two snowboarders said they only wear helmets in the mountains to protect their heads from rocks in the event of a fall.

Many Central Albertans were still busy removing the 15 cm of snow dumped in Saturday’s storm, then drifted by Sunday’s north wind.

Roy Brassard dead at 78

Mentor. Statesman. Hero.Family and a wide community of friends will bid their final farewell on Thursday to Roy Brassard, former Mountain View school trustee, Olds-Didsbury MLA, cabinet minister and chair of Chinook’s Edge Public School Division. Brassard, 78, died of leukemia on Friday.

Bus driver in fatal crash fined $2,300

CALGARY — The driver of a Calgary school bus that struck a parked gravel truck, killing one child and injuring 11 others, pleaded guilty to careless driving and was fined the maximum $2,300 on Tuesday.
