March 29, 2006

NIEMI Arvo Axel Niemi passed away peacefully on March 24, 2006, at St. Mary’s Health Care Centre, Trochu, with family members by his side. He was born on May 1, 1912, at Canmore, Alberta. With his parents, Axel and Hetvik, he moved to the Finnish settlement SE of Trochu, Alberta in 1913. Here he lived his entire life as a successful man and farmer. Arvo went to school at Three Hills Ridge and Trochu; and in 1929 studied Tractor Engineering at "the Tech", now Sait, which served him well in his farming operation. He was a very quiet, practical man who always displayed great calm and patience, whether skillfully repairing farm machinery, or dealing with all other aspects of working and living. He was not an emotional man, but his counsel and love were sound and strong. During the ‘50's he participated in the Lion' Club, and recently received his 50 year pin from the Masons. He married Elizabeth Scheunert on March 7, 1940, his loving wife and companion for 66 years. Left to share his greatest memories are his wife, Elizabeth. Daughter Eileen (Art) Schlenker and granddaughters Cara (Bruce) and Linelle (Steve) Giles – great grandchildren Carly and Cameron. Son Bob (Judyann) and grandchildren Ross (Vanessa) and Scott. Son Kevin (Wendy) and grandchildren Kyle and Troy. Nephews, nieces, and many dear friends. His cat misses him, too. Arvo was predeceased by his parents; mother (1959), his dad (1963), his older brother (1913), brother Aarne (1980), and his son, Dennis (1977). A Celebration of Life will be held in the Trochu Community Hall at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to St Paul’s United Church Memorial fund, or St. Mary’s Health Care Centre, Trochu. Arrangements entrusted to: Prairie Winds Funeral Home, Trochu, AB. (403) 442-2200.
