Barry Holmes

September 25, 1941 – July 22, 2022
Barry Holmes passed away on July 22, 2022, at the age of 80 years at the Rocky Mountain House Health Care Center. He was born in Vulcan, Alberta but lived in Red Deer until completing high school in 1959.
Barry attended the University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University and obtained his CPA (CA) designation in 1969. He was subsequently awarded his Fellowship by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2007.
Barry was an avid sports fan: curled and golfed from an early age. He skipped a high school rink to the Alberta High School finals losing out on the last rock in 1959.
After five years of practice in Vancouver with Arthur Andersen & Co., Barry and his family moved to Rocky Mountain House in 1972 where he joined Burrington and Heywood, Red Deer as full-time partner in Rocky.
Barry loved Rocky and was heavily involved in the community, notably as a co-founder of the Rocky Farmer’s Bonspiel, and terms as president of the Rocky Curling club, Pine Hills Golf Club and Kinsmen Club. In 2004, he was awarded the Lou Soppit Community Building Award for Rocky.
Barry was an active participant in the province, namely on provincial committees with the C.A. Institute and Alberta Financial Services Corporation. He served the Alberta Motor Association on various committees for 33 years, including 10 years as a Director and a term as Chairman.
Barry is survived by his wife Linda; son Gregory; brothers: David and Keith (Debbie) and sister Marney. He was pre-deceased by his first wife Joy (McKenzie) in 2005 and his son Russell in 2018.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at the Rocky Mountain House Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at 1:00 PM.
Memorial donations in Barry’s name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
