1938 - 2016
Mr. Barry Leslie of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away while surrounded by his family at the Foothills Medical Center in Calgary, Alberta, after a short illness, on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the age of 78 years. Barry was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on June 13, 1938, the second son of Victor and Lillian Leslie. Barry was raised on the family farm near Poplar Point, Manitoba with his three brothers, received his primary education at the Mill Creek School and attended the Manitoba Institute of Technology, where he certified as a welder. He married Ferne Staples in 1962 and brought his new bride to live at the farm. There they farmed alongside Victor and Lillian during the summers, and spent the winters in locations throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where Barry worked as a welder. In 1970, they moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where Barry worked as a construction foreman. In 1975, the family relocated to Red Deer, Alberta, where Barry continued his career as a foreman until his retirement in 2003. Barry was passionate about hockey, both as an accomplished junior player in his youth in Manitoba, and as a spectator in his later years. He also loved woodworking and gardening as retirement hobbies and travelled extensively with his family throughout his life. Barry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ferne; two sons, Russell (Janice) and Grant (Melissa); four grandchildren, Amanda, Justine, Reagan and Blake; brother, Keith (Jayne) Leslie; as well as numerous extended family and many dear friends. Barry was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Bobby and Brian. A Celebration of Barry's Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 - 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Barry's honor may be made directly to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton, Alberta or to the Tom Baker Cancer Palliative Ward in Calgary, Alberta.
