Benjamin Lawrence Berndt, 78, born February 3, 1936, of Penhold AB. died peacefully September 30th, 2014. Ben, son of Otto and Anna (Verigin, Saskatchewan), passed away in Innisfail at the Sunset Manor. He is survived by his two brothers Don and Marcel and sister Diane (Harold) Brookman. He is also survived by his three sons Rob (Roxanne), Brian (Melanie), Dan (Laura) and four grandchildren Brett, Sabrina, Monica and Mya. Ben worked in the Air Force as an Electronics and Communications Technician until his retirement in 1984. Ben was proud to serve 3 terms as mayor for the Town of Penhold proceeded by two terms on council and also donated time to the Red Deer Regional Planning commission. He was the first elected mayor for this small but growing community of Penhold. Ben was an active member and volunteer of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 104 were he received a lifetime membership for his contributions. Ben also committed to the Penhold Seniors Centre construction and management. Ben also loved hockey and if he wasn't at his grandson's games he could be found volunteering in timekeepers box for the Penhold women's Junior team the Amazons. Ben loved volunteering because it provided him the opportunity to be around people and socialize as well as give back to communities that supported him so well throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11th 2014 at 11:00 am at the Innisfail Legion. Donations can be made in his honor to the Innisfail Legion Branch 104.
