In Loving Memory (1928-2024) ~

We are saddened to announce the passing of our loving mother, Betty Mildred Matheson at home in Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the age of 95 years.

Betty was adopted by Fred and Mary Nelson of the Rainy Creek District, north of Sylvan Lake, Alberta after a rough start in life. She was the eighth of nine children and raised in this very loving and caring family. Her love and loyalty for her forever family was unyielding.

Betty met the love of her life, Glen Matheson in Red Deer, Alberta, where they married, lived, and raised three children. Betty and Glen spent a wonderful fifty-eight years together with many cherished memories.

Betty was an excellent homemaker, and our home was the meeting place for friends and family, whether it was up to sixty of her family for Christmas, neighborhood New Years Eve parties with Dad, out barbecuing at two in the morning, having Farmers Bonspiel teams in, hosting Easter Seals kids events and committees, or just having coffee with friends, and the neighborhood kids playing in the house or yard, our home was always open.

Once the kids were in school, Betty enjoyed many years working at the "Betty Shop" downtown, just a coincidence with the name but maybe it's how she was drawn to it. Betty was a lifelong member of the Lioness Club, working alongside Glen on many Lion's Club Projects, including the Red Deer Lion's Campground by the river, and handwriting every Easter Seal donation receipt.

Betty's lifetime love of art grew into a passion for watercolor painting. She painted many beautiful pictures which she sold alongside her son, Pat and daughter, Jill at many local sales and at their annual "Farm Art Sale" held at her childhood homestead. Betty and Glen carved out an acreage there, and so, were able to preserve it in the family for over a hundred years.

When Glen passed away in 2007, Betty moved from the Red Deer family home of fifty-eight and a half years into her own condo in 2016, where she loved being surrounded by her favorite things. She treasured the friendships formed there and the "Tea Parties" they had. It was always her wish to pass away at her home, and she was able to do that, one month short of her 96th birthday.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her three children; her son, Bill (Sandra), her son, Pat, and her daughter, Jill (Clint) Stewart; her five grandchildren and her nine great grandchildren. If desired, Memorial Donations in Betty's honor may be made directly to Easter Seals Alberta at www.easterseals.ab.ca.
