In Loving Memory ~
On October 26, 2021, Bev passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital after a long struggle with Parkinson's. Bev is lovingly remembered by his wife, Faye, (married 63 years), sons Scott (Allison), Kent (Mary-Ann) and their children, Emily (Riley), Kate and Eric and daughter Kim (Shawn) and their children, Kohlman and Kaylin and his brother Doug (Elaine). He was predeceased by his parents, Ron and Daisy, and his sister, Zoie.
Bev loved being an entrepreneur, whether it was selling bait worms as a young boy, honing his skills as a carpenter selling deck furniture, going broke as a pig farmer, driving a school bus and eventually becoming the president of the Ponoka Chamber of Commerce. In between were some great adventures.
Bev joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955, trained in the T-33 jet and later broke the sound barrier in a Sabre Jet in 1957. He trained numerous pilots on the Harvard aircraft both at CFB Penhold and CFB Moose Jaw and in his commercial air service, Hughes Air, that he ran with Faye from 1965-1978 in Ponoka.
He was elected town councillor in Ponoka and also served on the board for Alberta Hospital Ponoka from 1984-1990. Bev and Faye moved to Red Deer in 1985 and he continued working as an aviation consultant and operated the Windward Sailing School at Sylvan Lake from 1985-2001. His sailing adventures on the big water included sailing from Hawaii to Alaska and numerous trips through the Gulf Islands. He was an elected councillor for the City of Red Deer for 12 years; some of his contributions were the development of the Collicutt Centre and the Moose Cottage at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. In his later years, Bev enjoyed playing a mean blues harmonica, singing as a baritone in a barbershop quartet and tinkering with his classic cars, a 1931 Ford Model A (with a rumble seat) and a 1968 Mercury Cougar. He and Faye enjoyed camping and have been to every provincial park in Alberta.
He was a good man. A life long learner who pursued adventures that created growth and involved risk.
