In Loving Memory ~
It is with sadness that his family announces the passing of Calvin Edward Caldwell, who died peacefully in his sleep in Invermere, B.C. on June 6, 2025. Born December 21, 1947, Calvin was a farm boy from Ponoka, Alberta. After studying photography at NAIT in Edmonton, he pursued a career in photojournalism. He spent twenty years at the Red Deer Advocate, where he took photographs of everyone from politicians to royals, but his favorite subjects were everyday Albertans. A gifted photographer, Calvin loved the prairie landscape and left behind many striking images. After stints at newspapers in Winnipeg and Victoria, he returned to Alberta and worked for the Edmonton Journal as a page designer until he retired. A highly intelligent and creative individual with a great sense of humour, Cal made lifelong friends wherever he lived. He had a wide range of interests and an enormous fund of general knowledge. He was also an ardent sports fan, especially when it came to his beloved Oilers. Calvin was divorced with one daughter, Katie Caldwell Niddrie. In 2022 he moved to Invermere, B.C. to be closer to her family. He is survived by Katie (Tom) Niddrie, and grandchildren Nora, Juliet and Jack Niddrie. He is also survived by his sister Heather (Blaine) Lewis of Ponoka; their children Erin and Craig Lewis; nephews Alan and Stephen Caldwell of Calgary; and his former wife and friend Elinor Florence of Invermere. He was predeceased by parents Don and Vera Caldwell, and brother Ron Caldwell. A private service will be held.
