Donald passed away on November 27, 2009 in the Stettler Hospital at the age of 95, with his son Bob and grandson David, at his side. Donald was a big, quiet man and a "man of his word." He was born on the farm in the Great Bend district to Arthur and Mary Chaffin. He farmed with his father and then bought his own farm in the Rosedale area near Delburne. He was very strong in his youth and many of his peers remember his ability to keep going when they had to "call it a day." Donald married Phyllis Simioni on September 9, 1939. Their first son Carl died shortly after birth. Their second son Robert was born April 1943. Robert (Bob) continues to live on the family farm. When Donald retired from farming in 1975, he and Phyllis went travelling with their camper to various parts of Canada and the United States in the summer months. Donald was an avid gardener, mainly vegetables and fruits. He also continued helping with the harvest, hauling grain for over 80 consecutive years. Donald was predeceased by his wife Phyllis in July 1989; and one brother and four sisters. He is survived by his son Robert (Judy) Chaffin of Delburne; grandson David (Mary) and three great grandchildren: Brittany, Alexis and Parker of Delburne; granddaughter Christie (Eric Fithen) and great granddaughter Mackenzie of Red Deer. Donald also leaves one sister Leona Rasmussen of Delburne; special niece Betty Thomas of Vermilion; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend Eleanor Brownscombe of Strathmore, AB. At Donald's request there will be no formal funeral. There will be a graveside service in the spring at Great Bend Cemetery.
