Doris RILEY

May 20, 2009

RILEY Doris Louise On May 16, 2009, Doris (Dodie) Riley of Red Deer passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years. She will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by her daughter Karen (Dave), her grandchildren Susan Schurman of Edmonton, Derek Coombs of Calgary, Mike (Dawn) Schurman of Roswell, Georgia and Bob (Jess) Schurman of Red Deer and her four great grandchildren. Dodie was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her husband of 58 years, Lorne and her daughter Lorna Doull. Dodie was born July 23, 1918 in Charlottetown, PEI and spent her childhood in Montreal, Quebec with mother and father and her five brothers and sisters. She met and married her husband Lorne in Montreal and together they raised their two children there. During their retirement, they spent several winters in Pine Mountain, Georgia, quite a few years in Tsawwassen, BC and moved to Red Deer in the late nineties. Dodie dearly loved her family and friends. She loved to be involved in her church and community groups, was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years and more recently was active with the Red Hat Society. At Legacy Estates, where she lived for the past 8 years, she was an original owner and continued to be a very active member of the building Social Committee. She loved to have fun and enjoyed all kinds of social events. Family members or friends could always count on Dodie as a friend in good times and not so good times. Dodie's hobbies and pastimes included sketching and painting, sewing, small crafts and golfing. Most recently she completed framing special tributes for her 4 great grandchildren. She loved being able to manage independently and was able to drive her own car around town until very recently. Those who knew and loved her know about her strong will and firm opinions about many things, particularly politics. Dodie and Lorne's friend, Rev. John McKay will officiate at a Celebration of Life at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 4929 - 54 St. in Red Deer at 2:30pm on Thursday, May 21, 2009. Friends are invited for refreshments and fellowship following the service at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in her memory to David Thompson Health Region Foundation, 3942 - 50A Avenue, Red Deer, AB, T4N 4E7.
