Doug took all his schooling in Lacombe. As a teenager until his early twenties, Doug did mechanical work for Millers Garage, Mainline
Motors and Ferguson's Garage. In the early 60's he started what would end up being a lifelong career as a grader operator in road construction working for Hopkins and numerous other companies throughout Alberta. In the early 70's he spent a lot of time working in northern Alberta for Staheli Construction. In 1975 he bought his first grader and started his own business, Cartwright Excavating, and continued as a contractor with Stahelis. In 1985, after many years of being away from home and on the road, Doug decided to concentrate on the Lacombe area for work. He worked for numerous oil companies around the area blading and building lease roads. He also worked in the Towns of Bentley and Lacombe snowplowing and building subdivisions. In 2011 Doug sold his grader and retired at his acreage west of Lacombe where he spent time relaxing with family and friends.
