Earl BERDINE

September 19, 2006

BERDINE, Earl Berdine of Ponoka, Alberta passed away peacefully on September 14, 2006 at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 96 years. He was born in Perdue (Milo), Oregon on December 23, 1909 and came to Ponoka in 1914 with his family. He spent the rest of his life on the bank of Chain Lake, which has recently been named Berdine Lake in honor of this family. He attended Scott School, then started farming with his father and his brothers. In 1937, he married Lois Gee and moved to the adjoining farm. Together with his brother Clark, he spent 40 years farming. During that time, he also went out shearing sheep, fixing rural telephone lines and doing threshing for neighbors. He was very active in community life. He loved music and spent many a Saturday evening square dancing and calling for square dances. Earl was a very outgoing and fun-loving person. When he was young, he played hockey and baseball. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, curling, horse-shoes, playing cards and travel. Although Earl's formal education was short, he educated himself and kept himself informed by reading extensively. He was very knowledgeable in the fields of nature, geography, history and politics. Earl greatly enjoyed car trips far and near. He loved exploring new roads and could sniff out a blueberry patch or a fishing hole. We will remember him for his wit, his sense of humor, his community spirit, and his generosity. He had a great zest for life. He will be sadly missed by his family: sister Ruth Berdine; son Dennis (Aubrey) Berdine; daughters Dianne (Wayne) Carr and Carroll Borg; grandchildren Darren (Tania) Berdine, Pamela (Nathan) Rollheiser, Maureen (Rob) Adams, Shelley (Greg) Johnson and Kevin and Kristina Borg; four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his wife Lois in 1999, brothers Jay and Clark, sister Nellie Fleming and sons-in-law Ralph Linder and Robert Borg. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19 at the Ponoka United Church (5020 - 52nd Avenue). The Interment Service will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Ponoka. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Scott School Hall or the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.
