Eilert

April 9, 1927 - Dec. 6. 2014

Born in Duchess, AB, Eilert farmed near Brooks where he met Jessie, a nurse at the Brooks hospital. Following marriage and the arrival of their children, they moved to Lacombe in 1959 where they operated Tall Pine TV and Radio for 29 years. Tall Pine provided area residents with TV's, including the first color sets, vinyl records, cassette tapes and satellite dishes, with technicians to repair those TV's plus Eilert did house calls in the evenings. The store was also the scene of spontaneous jam sessions when a musician or two arrived. Eilert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jessie, son Douglas (Nguyet) of Brussels, Belgium, granddaughter Chandra of Dublin, Ireland, and grandson Sydney at University in South Bend, Indiana; and by his daughter Donna Polutnik (Rick) and grandsons Ross of Vancouver and David of Red Deer. Eilert may be best known around Lacombe as the old time fiddler who shared his love of music and entertained with his gentle humor and fun-loving ways. He expanded his musical energies to the meticulous restoration of violins and re-hairing of bows, and, of course, the annual Lacombe Fiddler's Jamboree. Eilert enjoyed the challenge of all kinds of repairs and of finding a better way to do something, which led to his nick name "Mr. Fix It". An Eilert-built project took time, but was always well thought out and crafted with great pride. Eilert was a long-time member of the Lacombe Flying Club, Kozy Korner Seniors Centre, and the L.A. Vintage Machinery Club - a solid John Deere man! He enjoyed contributing his energy and expertise, be it mechanical, musical, sound systems, or whatever needed doing. No matter what Eilert was involved in, he loved a good conversation. He was both a storyteller and a good listener. His quick-witted humor always gave his listeners a laugh, and he said laughter made the day good! A service of remembrance will be held at St. Andrew's United Church in Lacombe, AB on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, donations in memory of Eilert may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, #202, 5913 - 50 Ave, Red Deer, AB T4N 4C4.
