NIEMI Elizabeth (Liz) Martha Niemi took her peaceful leave on May 7, 2009 at the excellent age of 91 when her indomitable spirit could no longer cope with her failing body. The eldest of four daughters of Louis and Anna Scheunert, she was born August 17, 1917, living in the Trochu area all her life. With her marriage to Arvo Niemi on March 7,1940, Elizabeth continued her farm life, living the diversity of family, church, and community alongside her beloved husband of sixty-six years. Blessed with the love of nature, an energetic work ethic, a talent and an eye for the artistic, plus a sense of history and adventure, almost no craft, photographic opportunity, gardening challenge, recipe, or activity was too daunting. She loved social occasions and. never ran out of work, ideas, projects, or interests - only of time. Elizabeth was active in the United Church, choir, and a longtime volunteer with the Pastoral Care Team at St. Mary's Health Care Centre in Trochu. Her true and valued Treasures of Life were those she said made her life so meaningful including daughter Eileen (Art) Schlenker, son Bob (Judyann) Niemi, son Kevin (Wendy) Niemi, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two sisters, Elsie Ford, Calgary, and Nora Babuik, Penticton, BC, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many great friends. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Arvo, her son, Dennis, and her sister, Ida Walker. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2 pm, at the Trochu Community Centre. Gratefully accepting donations in memory and in lieu of flowers are St. Paul's United Church Memorial Fund (Trochu), St, Mary's Health Care Centre (Trochu), and Three Hills Health Care Centre (Three Hills).
