ATKINSON Ernest Roy Ernest Roy Atkinson, known as Ernie died at age 92, October 11, 2009. He was a resident of Lacombe Long Term Care Center. Ernie was born July 24, 1917 in Innisfail on the homeplace west of town bordering the Red Deer River. He was part of the large family of George and Agnes Atkinson and 11 siblings, Annie, Elsie, Lena, Vera, George, Burn, Eva, Agnes, Joe, Doris and Lillian. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Ernie was married to Marjorie Krause in 1948 who sadly passed away in 1962 at the age of 34 years. He was blessed with three daughters, Carrol Atkinson (McKay) of Lacombe, Gloria Atkinson-Dent of Red Deer and Rhonda Charles of Blackfalds. His grandchildren, Chris and Angela McKay of Red Deer, Aaron Dent of Edmonton, Amber Atkinson and Bradey Charles of Blackfalds. And great grand daughter Jessica Bertelson of Lloyminister gave him much joy and comfort. Ernie gave up farming and moved to Lacombe in 1948 to start a new career in the gravel business with his brother Burn. He worked on the major highways in the area and many places throughout the province and just before retiring worked on 2 large dam sites, Brasseux and Dixon. He had a second chance at love when he met Dora MacLean of Bentley. They danced the night away for over 20 years and spent many happy times together. When he wasn’t working he spent time gardening, playing cards, visiting with friends at the A&W and of course dancing. He was a hard worker , devoted family man and good neighbor and friend. The funeral will take place at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 19, 2009 at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 on Hwy 2A, in Lacombe. Lunch to follow at Lacombe Legion. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your cause of choice such as Heart and Stroke, Diabetes or the Alzhiemer’s Society. "Work as if you don’t need the money.
