Ernie Lang, age 82, of Red Deer, AB passed away at Lewis Hall, Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth, NS on July 7, 2020.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan he was the son of the late William "Bill" and Lena "Lee" (Hauck) Lang.
Ernie was raised in Windthorst, Saskatchewan. At the age of 19, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Rifleman and served on NATO duty in Germany. After finishing his army service, Ernie earned his trade certification as a painter and decorator while working with his uncle in Winnipeg. During that time he met his beloved wife, Kathy, and the two of them relocated to Alberta eventually settling in Red Deer. After a back injury ended his career as a painter, Ernie joined the Corps of Commissionaires with whom he served for more than 25 years until retirement.
Ernie was an avid outdoorsman all his life. He loved fishing, duck hunting and most especially hunting for deer. He enjoyed camping, hiking, ice skating, snow shoeing, cross counting skiing, snowmobiling, boating, swimming, water skiing and anything else that involved being outside. He simply loved being out in nature, a passion he passed on to his daughter, Shelley.
He was a devoted gardener and always kept a beautiful yard and an amazing vegetable garden - another passion he passed on to his daughter. He was a dedicated fan of NHL hockey (Go Oilers!) and CFL football (Go Eskimos!) and, in later years, an obsessive watcher of golf. He and Kathy loved to travel and after retirement they took many fun filled trips to warm destinations and made many friends along the way. After Kathy passed he took up bowling again and enjoyed several fun filled years of bowling and companionship with a great group of friends in Red Deer.
Ernie was pre-deceased by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen "Kathy" (White); younger sister Marlene and younger brother Glenn. He is survived by his daughter Shelley of Dartmouth, N.S., his sister Julie (Tim) of Yorkton and his nephews Dean, Corey, Chris and Adam.
Funeral/memorial services will be held at a later date in Winnipeg, MB.
