MACNAUGHTON Evangeline MacNaughton born November 26, 1931, passed away August 23, 2009, peacefully with her family by her side after a valiant five-week struggle following heart surgery in Regina, SK. Beloved wife of 57 years to David Parks MacNaughton and loving mother of Ann (Jerry), David "Mac", Patty, Pam (Kevin), Cam (Debbie), Mark (Carol) and John (Carolyn). Grandmother to Kat and Alex, Shannon and Nicola, Ryan, Peter, Blake and Randi. The loss of their "sis" will be deeply felt by Kay Apps, Nick (Madeline) Camche, Bill (Grace) Camche, and by sister-in-law Margaret (Alex) Charters and their families. Vange was born in Buckland, Saskatchewan and grew up on her parent's homestead six miles west of Prince Albert. She was the third of five children of Greek immigrants. Her father George served in WWI and returned to Greece to marry Evtemia, who followed him to Canada a year later with their first child, Kay. Though Vange's life on the farm was hard, she learned to not take anything for granted and to appreciate all that life and Canada had to offer. Vange met Dave on the roller skating rink at Waskesiu in Prince Albert National Park in 1951. Married in 1952, seven children followed in the space of 10 years. The young couple first moved to Edmonton where Dave attended law school and Vange tended her flock. The count was at five when they moved to Stettler in 1959, where they built their first home. Interspersed with the raising of seven children, Vange pursued her many passions: starting a Kindergarten, playing bridge, study club, the United Church, Liberal politics, travel, and summers in Waskesiu, skiing, golf, canoeing, reading, CBC radio, cooking and food. She also adopted the varied passions of her children, ranging from hunting, fishing, all sports and the arts. Vange found new challenges when the family moved to the farm in 1974. A bare hill was transformed into a five-bedroom house surrounded by a five-acre yard. Every tree, shrub, blade of grass and garden plot was a further expression of Vange's labour and creativity. She discovered one of her favourite passions, pottery, shortly after. What started as a single pottery wheel in the basement grew to include a separate studio of six wheels where she taught lessons and practiced her craft. The annual sale of Bird and Bell pottery was widely anticipated, as were her lessons. Vange was a dynamic person, as shown by her foray into official federal politics in 1984, when she ran as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Crowfoot. She suffered the fate of many Liberals before her with her dignity and integrity intact. Vange had a specially significant, meaningful and personal impact on the lives of everyone who met her. She had a unique ability to both listen and counsel with empathy and without judgment. Her coffee was the best, because it was served with love and kindness and unmatched hospitality. Vange's arms were wide and comforting but strong enough to hold anyone who needed her support. Funeral services for Vange MacNaughton will be held on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home, 4707-70 Street, Stettler, AB (directly behind WalMart).
