LEWIS

Evelyn Irene

1927 - 2014

It is with great sadness that the family of Evelyn Lewis announce her passing on October 12, 2014 at the Innisfail hospital. Born in Edmonton, Evelyn was the first-born child, and only daughter of Richard ("Van") and Hazel Vanderberg. Soon after, Evelyn moved with her parents to southern Alberta, where they lived in Farrow and Claresholm until 1934, when 'Van' decided to start his own business. Evelyn, along with her parents and two younger brothers, moved west of Innisfail, where 'Van' built a general store. They were the first residents of what later became known as the hamlet of Spruce View. Hazel and Van's last child - Evelyn's baby brother - was born the following year. Along with many friends and neighbours Evelyn attended the old Spruce View School; and then took her high school years in Dickson, where she graduated. Evelyn was married to Jim Lewis for fifteen years, living mainly in Devon and Spruce View. To this union, was born one daughter, Jody. At this point, Evelyn became a very hard-working, single mother. She was always a very caring and loving person, living a very simple lifestyle. In addition to her love of flowers and nature, Evelyn was an amazingly gifted lady, very busy with her painting, pottery, writing, sewing, intricate needlework, and various other crafts. Many people are fortunate to still have some of her work in their homes today. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Hazel; one brother, Leslie; and one great-grandson, Ben Chandler. She is survived by one daughter, Jody (Jeff White); four grandsons - Stacy (Colynn), Troy (Mary), James (Paula), and Trevor (Jen); six great grandchildren - Zach (Jess), Spencer, Jordyn, Kailynn, Payton and Emily; two brothers and their families - Allan (Pat) and Ken (Dianne); and our Lewis family. And last, but certainly not least, very special friends Eva and Alfred Ferdinand, and their children, Jennifer, Thomas, and Christopher, whom Evelyn added to her list of grandchildren. A 'Celebration of Life' will be held for Evelyn on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Spruce View Community Hall at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park, NE Calgary, Alberta, T2E 8M7.
