TOWERS, Gary Lee

1948 - 2018

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Gary Lee Towers on February 3rd, 2018 at his home in Red Deer at the age of 69 years after a courageous battle with cancer.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Karen and their children Darryl (Candy) Towers of Red Deer and Deanne (Brent) Webster of Calgary as well as the joys of his life; his four adoring granddaughters Talyn and Tory Towers and Sienna and Serena Webster. Also honouring his memory are Gary's loving siblings Tom (Margaret) Towers, Lynda (Rob) Purdie, Ross (Kerri) Towers all of Red Deer and Leona (Bob) Hedley of Consort and also his sister-in-law Bonnie (Gary) Schwindt of Spruce Grove in addition to many nieces, nephews and friends.

Gary was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Doris Towers, mother and father-in-law Sandy and Marjorie Walker as well as his nephews Troy Towers and Trey Purdie.

Gary was born in 1948 in Red Deer, the second child of Gordon and Doris. He graduated from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in 1966 and met the love of his life Karen Walker that summer while attending 4-H selections at Olds College. Gary and Karen were married in 1968 and worked and resided on the family farm until 1978. Gary ventured into the fertilizer business and formed Westview Fertilizers in 1980. Gary and Karen retired from the fertilizer business in 1995 and spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona where they met many wonderful people that have become lifelong friends. Gary sat on the AMA board for the last several years as well as being a judge for the Chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede for the last 19 years.  He was also involved in the AgriTrade and the Westerner.

Gary was very active in sports throughout the years including curling, baseball and golf and at the age of 10 he was the Canadian Speed Skating Champion. Gary was a generous and witty individual who loved spending time with his family and many loyal friends. Gary had a way of connecting with everyone he met young and old.

A celebration of life will be held on April 30, 2018 when friends return from the south. Service details will be announced in mid April. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Trey Purdie Memorial Scholarship Fund or Smiles Thru Lindsey Fund at the Red Deer and District Community Foundation (RDDCF).

The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at the RDRH and a special thank you to Gary's sister Leona for her dedication and care.

Condolences to Gary's family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
