George WYLLIE

May 1, 2008

WYLLIE George John Mr. George Wyllie of Edmonton, formerly of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2008 at the age of 79 years. Born in Brock, Saskatchewan, George completed a BSc in Pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1951. He married Anne Mady, and moved to Edmonton and to Rimbey, Alberta in 1955 where he owned and operated Wyllie's Pharmacy and later also co-operated Alpine Drugs in Rocky Mountain House. He retired in Edmonton in 1984. George is survived by his loving wife Anne, sons Bob (Elaine Maloney) and Mark (Joanne) and daughters Elaine Pallister (Syd) and Paula Reiser (Jim), sisters Doris and Loraine; predeceased by son Richard 'Ricky.' George was a devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren (Thomas, Angela, and Sean Pallister; Steven, Evan, Nathan and Ryan Reiser; Erin, Andrea, and Heather Wyllie), and one great grandson (Dylan Pallister). George had many diverse interests, most notably fishing and woodworking. He traveled extensively, with family and extended family, exploring new and old world sites, enjoying the experience of interactions and local cultures. He loved to read, and carried with him an encyclopedic knowledge that never left him lacking for a topic for discussion (or debate!). He loved to listen to and tell a good story; his enjoyment of conversation was genuine, his laughter infectious. But, it was music that he held dearest to his heart and that would always be a large part of his life. His passion for music was expressed in many ways; George played the saxophone and keyboards in several dance bands, and was a founding member of the Edmonton Barbershop Chorus in 1954, later directing a group in Rimbey. George was very engaged in the community, committing to the work of the Chamber of Commerce, Town Council, Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and the United Church. He also led many community projects, including the construction of the arena and swimming pool. A man of character and intelligence and devotion to family, longtime friends, business associates, and community, George leaves us with many fond and endearing memories, his gift of laughter, and most of all, his love of music. The family expresses sincere thanks to the dedicated staff of the Misericordia and University of Alberta Hospital, the Glenrose, and the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre for the excellent and compassionate care he received. A service in celebration of George's life will be held at the United Church in Rimbey Alberta, Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 2 :00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.
