October 10, 2008

George A. Fillion 1919 - 2008 A kind Gentleman passed away suddenly and unexpectedly aged 89 years at RDRH on September 30, 2008 as a result of complications due to a fall. He leaves behind a huge emptiness in the hearts of his daughter Sandra McDowell (James), His daughter-in-law Kate Fillion, 5 grandchildren, 6 great- grandchildren, special niece Sharon Fillion, numerous additional relatives and friends and his beloved dog Bailey-Boy. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years Joyce (2005) whom he dearly missed, his son Clint (2003) and his brother Paul (2005). George was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1941 he joined the RCAF and became a pilot. He was at the top of his class and was chosen to become a flying instructor, training many future pilots at bases throughout Western Canada. After the war, he settled his family in Calgary where he joined the staff at City Hall. He eventually became the Assistant Personnel Director for the City of Calgary. Retirement years brought travel with his wife and the time to indulge in his many hobbies. He loved trains, ships, reading, opera, and history. He was very interested in people and their stories and he had a great sense of humour. Our thanks go out to the many that made his move to Red Deer an enjoyable 4 years: the wonderful and caring staff and residents at the Redwood Retirement Residence, the ladies at TD Canada Trust (South) who he loved to chat with, the staff at Chapters where he spent many hours and bought countless books. We thank also his special friend Jim Cullen (Calgary) with whom he had a shared love of history and trains, and Doctors McIntyre and Carter, who enabled him to enjoy his last few years. He requested that no memorial service be held. We were so fortunate to have had a family dinner just 2 days prior to his passing. George enriched the lives of those he spent time with and will be greatly missed.
