When Mamie was five years old the family moved to a new quarter section, two and a half miles south east of Halkirk, AB. She attended school in Halkirk and was one of the few of her generation to complete her grade 12 education. Mamie went on to Camrose Normal School (1935 - 1936) taking a one year course to become a teacher. When she was nineteen she became acquainted with a neighbor boy Martin Elvin Larson. They courted and were married on December 23, 1938 at his parents’ home. Mel and Mamie’s first home was a two room bunk house on his dad's farm. They started a family and once the children were in school, Mamie returned to teaching; she taught at different schools throughout Paintearth County. In1971, Mel and Mamie retired from the farm and moved to Red Deer. In Red Deer, Mamie taught at Red Deer Christian School until she retired in the 1980's. Mamie enjoyed travelling around the countryside with Mel taking pictures for him to draw. She spent hours knitting and reading while Mel did his art. She also looked after the "old people" in their various condos. Mamie's final years were spent in Sunrise Village at Olds, AB and later the Long Term Care Facility in the Olds Hospital.
