January 7, 2006

FISHER, Gerald Norman (1919 - 2006) Gerry Fisher gave his last farewell at Harmony Group of Care Home, Red Deer surrounded by his very caring family on Wednesday, January 4, 2006. Born June 17, 1919 at Wolmsley, England, he returned soon after to his home in Sedalia, Alberta. His father Norman had started his homestead in the Sedalia area in 1905 and Gerry grew up on the farm with his 2 younger brothers and many farm chores including the care of six horses. His father built the first of several family grocery businesses beginning in Sedalia in 1927. Gerry demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by starting his own grocery and dry goods store in the neighboring village of New Brigden in 1939 at the age of 20. There he met the new district nurse Helen Pocock and commenced a grand romance which was celebrated with their marriage in 1941. Shortly after he enlisted with the RCAF and completed his service overseas in 1946 with the rank of Flying Officer. He returned to his family in Sylvan Lake to work in the new family business - Cobb's Store. He spent the rest of his working career building the family business, which he eventually sold to his son Allan. Gerry was an excellent businessman and served as the Chairman of the Board of Associated Grocers of western Canada for 25 years. Gerry's greatest love was his wife Helen followed by his family. He and Helen enjoyed a wonderful life together and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2001. Helen passed away the following year. The two of them are survived by five very grateful children, Dale (Carol), Allan (Lynn), Lorne (Rosivy), Dianne (Hal), and Susan (Gene) and Gerry's brothers Michael and Barry (Marnie) and sister-in-law, Jean Pocock. Gerry was the very loved grandfather of Chris, Danielle, Kyla, Rosabel, Natalia, Paul, Sarah, Bronwyn and Brody and two great grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge the compassion and loving care of the management and staff of Harmony Group of Care Home as well as the Sylvan Lake Lodge and the Bethany Care Centre. A Memorial Service will be held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Sylvan Lake, Alberta 2:00 P.M., Monday, January 9, 2006 with Reverend Bob Wilson officiating.
