In loving memory ~
It is with deep sadness that the family of Gordon E. Clow, P.Eng, a former resident of Red Deer, announce his sudden and unexpected death on Friday, March 28, 2025. Gord had been living in White City, Saskatchewan for the past 9 years, and had just turned 56.
Born on March 23, 1969 in Brockville, Ontario, he was the youngest of 6 children to Harold and Joan Clow (who previously passed, within 8 days of each other, in February 2016). An above average athlete, he excelled at baseball and especially hockey as a young man. At ten, he scored 108 goals and had 58 assists in 62 games for the AAA Atom team from Brockville in 1979-80, and was a member of the Ontario Championship Little League baseball team in 1980 at eleven. Gord also lettered in both basketball and volleyball while in high school, was a 12 handicapper in golf, and an avid cyclist. When his playing days were over, Gord devoted countless hours of his time as a baseball coach, and for several years taught his players the finer points of the game. He also enjoyed playing fantasy football, and was a lifelong fan of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Dallas Cowboys.
Gord attended both Commonwealth Public School and Brockville Collegiate Institute (where he became an Ontario Scholar) in his hometown, then obtained his B.A.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1992. He worked for a variety of firms during his University Co-op sessions, with the highlight being a stint as a site inspector with H.H. Angus - one of the design consultants who oversaw the construction of the SkyDome in downtown Toronto. Gord worked for several years with his architect father Harold and engineer brother Peter in the family firm Clow Associates, then joined Peter in Red Deer, working for Bearden Engineering Consultants. In the summer of 2002, the brothers left that firm to open Cognidyn Engineering & Design, a multiple disciplinary consulting company. Gord was very meticulous in his work, with a strict attention to detail, and was adapt at both general architectural design and structural engineering. He contributed several prominent building designs with the Cognidyn team, most notably the Riverlands Gate office building in downtown Red Deer. In late 2016, he moved to White City (Regina), Saskatchewan to open a satellite office there for Cognidyn, and was able to make a good mark into the local engineering marketplace, with a number of repeat clients established. Gord was a licensed professional engineer, registered with PEO (Ontario); APEGA (Alberta) and APEGS (Saskatchewan). He also delved into the development world, designing and constructing a few higher end homes in White City.
As a lifelong bachelor, Gord did not have any children of his own, but thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his 13 nieces and nephews, and many younger people at neighbourhood events in White City. A gentle giant of a man with a dry wit, he thoroughly enjoyed a laugh with his family and friends. Aside from his parents, Gord was also pre-deceased by his older sister Lezlie in July, 1979. He is survived by his brother David from Victoria, BC; his brother Bruce (wife Susan) from Auckland, NZ; his sister Peggy from Concord, NC; and his brother and business partner Peter (wife Heather) from Red Deer, AB. He also leaves an aunt and uncle, Marilyn and Ed Kalbfleisch from Orillia, ON and will be sadly missed by several cousins.
A memorial service celebrating Gordon's life will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at the Westerner Park Chalet in Red Deer, starting at 3:00pm. A similar event was recently held for his friends and colleagues in White City. His ashes will be buried back in Ontario at a private family event in June this year. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (or any charity of your choice) will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
