When Harold was growing up he worked at various jobs, mainly farming. Early in the "Dirty Thirties" when jobs were almost impossible to find he was so determined to find work that he rode the tops of the freight trains from Alberta to Ontario to get work. He married Lillian "Babe" Moore of Lacombe, Alberta on October 18, 1938. After they were married they rented a farm and moved to the Iola, Alberta district. After a short while they moved back to Lacombe, Alberta and Harold worked as a farmhand in the area. In 1943 Harold and Babe rented a farm that they later purchased at Forshee, Alberta where they raised their family, and looked after their farming operation of grain and cattle until their retirement. In 1977 they sold the farm and retired to Bentley, Alberta where they lived up until his passing. Harold's greatest joys were his family, friends and his cattle feedlot. Harold belonged to the Bentley Elk's Club for many years, the Forshee Farmers Singing Group, and was an avid curler and golfer until his health started to fail. Harold enjoyed life to the fullest with both the young and the old.
