GILMOUR

Harold Ernest

March 13, 1937 - Dec. 30, 2011

It is with great sorrow that the family of Harold Ernest Gilmour announces his passing at Red Deer Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Armidale, Australia, Harold met his future wife Lois (nee Parker) in Sydney and emigrated to Canada at the age of 23 as an electrician. Harold held various jobs including derrickhand on the oil rigs, managing a mica mine, running a hog operation, and line foreman at Travel-Aire. He subsequently started his own business, Red Deer Recreational Vehicle Repair Ltd., which he operated for 30 years. Harold manufactured trailers, motorhomes and campers under the trade name Sno-Cap. In later years Harold focused on service, parts and accessories, priding himself on being able to repair most problems found in todays RVs. Harold was one of the founding members of the Central Alberta Vintage Auto Club. When he retired to the farm east of Penhold on Highway 2, he was able to follow his passion spending his days restoring several antique cars. Harold was very inventive and loved building things from scratch. He created various ornaments for the yard such as an emu and an alligator, a guest house for visitors, a gazebo, and a bridge. His efforts were recognized with the Red Deer County Beautification Award in 2010. Harold enjoyed woodworking and built several pieces of furniture including a grandfather clock and a china cabinet. A lover of animals, Harold tended to numerous horses, cows and flocks of chickens along with several cats and dogs over the years. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing his own vegetables. Harold and his wife Lois celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in 2011. Harold is predeceased by his mother, Mary Gilmour (nee Meehan) and his father, Ernest Gilmour both born in Guyra, Australia. Harold is survived by his wife Lois of Red Deer, his son Parker and daughter-in-law Dian of Calgary. He is also survived by his three brothers Brian, Dennis and Paul, an aunt, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Australia. Harold was a kind man with a dry wit, a ready smile, and was a "creative" storyteller. Whilst always ready to help others in need, Harold would give of himself without asking for recognition. We will miss him dearly. Special thanks is extended to the wonderful staff of Unit 32 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. In celebration of his life, a memorial service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 - 67 A Street, (Taylor Drive) Red Deer on Friday, January 6, 2012 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, your local SPCA, or to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhomel.com
