Helen FISS

FISS Helen Margaret Fiss passed away in Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital, Castor on Monday, March 30th, 2009 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 22 days. Helen was born in Castor and lived in the Sullivan Lake area (called the Horseshoe District) with her mother (Violet Rachel Gibson Nee Walsh) and father (Losure Tipton) and married Murray Fiss of Alliance in 1948. Her early school years were in the Horseshoe District at Pollux School and later attended high school in Castor. After high school Helen worked at the Five to a Dollar Store and then managed the grocery store for many years and took an active role in the family business at Castor Sheet Metal Ltd. She also had a successful flower shop in Castor called the Designer Boutique. Helen was predeceased by her brother Leonard Gibson; mother Violet and father Lozure. She is survived by her husband Murray Fiss of Castor; her four children Darrell, Brian, Sharon (Dennis) Barthel and Marlene Fiss; and her four grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family. Helen touched many people with her gentle warmth and passion; We love you and miss you Mom. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in Knox United Church, Castor, AB with Rev. Barbara Zimmerman officiating. Loving tributes were given by her daughters Sharon Barthel and Marlene Fiss as well as by long time friend Vern Hein. The congregational hymns were The Old Rugged Cross, How Great Thou Art and Just A Closer Walk With Thee. Soloist Ruth Hays sang "In The Garden" accompanied by Marty Hays. The Knox United Church Choir sang "Softly and Tenderly". Members of the Castor Legion were present as an Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Dennis Filipenko, Richard Brown, Doug Shaw, Leo Hagerty, Dave Robinson, Percy Fairbrother, Joe Neumeier, Ken Wetter, Sam Morie, Stan Collier, Charlie Schaffner, Dennis Burnside, Vern Fletcher, Phil Dietz, Lorne Weseen, Alf Wark and Members of the Legion and Senior Ball Team. The interment followed in the Castor Legion Cemetery. The family and friends then gathered in the church hall for a time of fellowship and luncheon prepared and served by the Knox United Church Women. Should friends desire memorial tributes may be made in Helen's memory to the Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital Foundation or to the Alzheimer's Society.
