Hugh Buffington

1921 - 2009

Hugh was born in Coleman, Alberta January 4, 1921. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Jean, and his daughter Gayle Berry. He leaves behind eight grandchildren (Duncan Cross, Nicholas Berry, Graham Cross, Carl Berry, Valerie Cross, Pamela Berry, Logan Cross and Andrea Berry) and two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Linnea Cross. Also, his youngest sister Joyce Lorenzo and her husband Al and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Molly Arrison (in 2003) and his son Guy Berry in 1989. Hugh worked for the Royal Bank of Canada from 1938 until his retirement in Lacombe, Alberta in 1979. He began his career in Sexsmith, Alberta and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1939-1945. During this time he served with regiments in England, Africa, India, Italy and Burma. Upon his return from the service Hugh was assigned to Cardston, Alberta where he worked with his future brother-in-law. He married Jean Kelly in 1949 and they moved to Hanna. From Hanna, Hugh became bank manager at Hines Creek, Alberta and then again in Barons, Evansburg, Didsbury, and finally Lacombe, Alberta. (In the past eight years Jean and Hugh have enjoyed life in Red Deer.) He was an active member of the Masons, the Legion and elks in each town he resided in. He always volunteered on church boards and carved many turkey at the local turkey dinners, He loved to hunt, fish, curl, golf, play bridge and win at crib tournaments. However, his favourite sport was out in his rowboat on Moberly Lake in northern BC. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Wilson's Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe Alberta.
