Irene Oneil (formerly George) was born in Didsbury, Alberta in 1923. She joined the Royal Canadian Airforce during WWII and served for two years.
Irene was a feminist before the 1960's, taking on full responsibility for her 3 children, Carol, Dianne and Allan after her first marriage ended. Mrs. George worked as a school teacher and continued her own education to improve her skills and job prospects while raising 3 kids by herself during an era when that was unexpected and unconventional. She taught in several small communities in Alberta and wound up her career at Bowness and Okotoks High Schools. Her continued education resulted in a BEd with specialties in Business Education, Library Science and Guidance Counseling. Her kids were in high school when Irene and her second husband completed the family with another daughter, Peg.
Irene's dedication to education continues - she donated her body to the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine in order to provide an education to even more students.
In her retirement Irene became a serious bridge player, playing in clubs across Calgary. The community, activity and mental stimulation kept her on top of her game for many years.
Irene is fondly remembered by her 4 children, 4 grandchildren (Chris, Patrick, Kurt and Holly) and 4 great-grandchildren.
She passed away in Red Deer, Alberta on September 14, 2019. The family extends its gratitude to Dr. J. Hopfner for his compassionate care.
