Isla WAGERS

WAGERS Isla Kathleen Wagers (Munden) of Innisfail, passed away at the Innisfail Health Centre on June 24, 2005 at the age of 84 years. Isla was born September 13th, 1920, in Sydney, Australia, the eldest child of Robert and Connie Munden. Isla grew up in Sydney with her brother John and, even as a young child, had a gift for drawing and writing. Isla was a graduate of the Australian National Art School and for several years worked as an artist for a Sydney advertising firm. During the war, she participated in the war effort as a draftsman for the Australian Ministry of Munitions. Isla met her husband, John, in Sydney, Australia while he was awaiting transport home to Canada following the end of WWII. Isla and John were married in 1949 in Vancouver, B.C. and settled on their farm on Antler Hill, where John farmed in partnership with his brothers Robert and Lester. In 1971, Isla took a job with the Red Deer Recreation Centre as the co-ordinator of Senior Citizens Activities. Isla was instrumental in the creation of Downtown House, a drop-in centre for senior citizens and organized many bus trips throughout Alberta for the enjoyment of the seniors. In their later years, John and Isla spent many happy days travelling the roads of Alberta, and also to Europe to visit their son Richard or Eastern Canada to visit their daughter Patricia and her family in Quebec. In 1987, Isla and John retired to a home in the Malmo Plains subdivision in Edmonton, where they lived until John’s passing in 2003. Isla returned to Innisfail that fall and took up residence in the newly constructed “Piper’s Landing” condominium, where she lived until her passing. Isla will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Richard Wagers; Patricia Wagers (Neil Bell); Pamela (Terry) Maddison; Eric (Brigitta) Wagers; six grandchildren: John Alexander and Dominique Madeleine; Andreas and Rebecca; Annette and Steven; nieces Fiona (John) White of New Zealand and Wendy (Chris) Biddle of Australia; sisters-in-law, Maude Handford; Mary (Marvin) Latimer; Jessie Wagers; May Wagers; brothers-in-law, Lester Wagers; George (Margaret) Wagers; Arthur Wagers; Tom (Shirley) Wagers. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 29th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Innisfail with Lavinia West officiating. Donations may be made in Isla’s name to the Salvation Army, 4837–54th Street Red Deer, Alberta T4N 2G5.
