QUARTEL, Jack

Called to his eternal home by his Heavenly Father, we fondly remember Jack, a loving husband to Afina, for almost sixty years. Jack was born in Westmaas, The Netherlands on February 24, 1928. Immigrating to Canada in 1948 as a young man, eventually arriving in Penhold, AB. It was in Penhold where he first met Afina and they exchanged wedding vows on October 29, 1954. Living on an acreage outside of Red Deer, they ran a trucking business together and raised a family.

In 1974 they sold their trucking business and Jack was then a realtor for several years. In 1978 they moved back into Red Deer in the Pines and in 2009 moved to their present condominium. In retirement they loved to travel and spent many months driving all over North America. Jack and Afina became snowbirds in the 1980's and spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona. Jack enjoyed working with both stamps and coin sets and built sizeable collections over the years. He had a deep faith life and spent many years serving at First Christian Reformed Church in Red Deer as an elder, chairman of council, and as church treasurer for 13 years. Jack was a member and proud supporter of First CRC for over 63 years.

He is lovingly remembered by his children; John and Donna Quartel and their children, Sarah, Michael and Kristin (and their child Blake), Laura; Harvey and Trudy Quartel and their children, Stephanie and Carmelo (and their child Ailee), Brad and Emily (and their child Addison) and Matthew; Marion and Don Reitsma and their children, Marisa and Devon Prins (and their children: Landon and Wade), Michelle and Shae Lowther (and their children: Reece, Lochlan and Graham), Krystal; and Mike Quartel. He was predeceased by Afina and his siblings Adri (and Cor) Boer, Jane (and Mac) Traas, Theo Quartel, and Jan (and Corrie) Quartel and he is survived by his sister Ella (and husband Wim) Tuk, and Sien Blok-Quartel, all of the Netherlands.

A Graveside Service will be held at Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. for family members and close friends. A Memorial Service will take place at the First Christian Reformed Church, 16 McVicar Street, Red Deer on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
