REMPEL

1950 - 2016

It is with extreme sadness that we announce that John Allan Rempel, formerly of Red Deer, passed away on the island of Syros, Greece on November 27, 2016 at the age of 66 years. John was born in Calgary, lived for a short time in Beiseker AB, then the family moved to Red Deer where John went to school and attended Red Deer College before completing a bachelor of education degree at the University of Calgary. John taught for a short while and then became involved in the retail music business, both in Calgary, and for a period of time in Cowichan Bay BC and Melbourne, Australia. John returned to Canada via Europe during which he was captivated by Greece; he vowed to return. For the last 30 years John divided his time between Alberta and Greece, initially living in Athens and then in Ermoupoli, Syros. Although he struggled with the Greek language his love for the country never faded. John lived his life on his own terms and could hold forth on politics, literature, music, or any other subject with wit, erudition and good humour. John is survived by his beloved sister Charlotte (Michael) Braithwaite; cousins Allison Pettinger and Gaynor Hoglund as well as numerous friends in Greece and Alberta. He was predeceased by his father Wilbert (Bill); mother Doris and aunts Fern, Pearl and Margaret. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, both here in Alberta and Greece. A private graveside service is planned. For those wishing to do so, memorial donations in John's honour may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice. Words of condolence for John's family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
