John BRITTON

January 7, 2009

BRITTON John Thomas "Jack" John Thomas "Jack" Britton passed away at his residence at the Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge, Sylvan Lake, on Saturday January 3, 2009. He was born May 10, 1929 to Tom and Olive Britton at his grandparents home near Penhold. Jack was raised on the family farm with his sisters Daisy and Betty in the Marianne district, west of Sylvan Lake. He went to school at Marianne and Kuusamo, sometimes walking, sometimes riding a horse. While growing up, Jack had varied interests including riding in the Benalto Stampede, playing "pond" hockey and baseball, working the land, hunting, fishing and attending barn dances. Many of his childhood acquaintances flourished into lifelong friendships. Jobs held included working in lumber camps, and for the City of Calgary, threshing for local farmers and eventually operating his fathers farm. On April 21, 1956 Jack married Lois Wakey. Lois and Jack had three children and as they grew up many activities became tradition. The most important thing to Jack was family, and as the children got older their friends became extended family. Many a Sunday you could drive into Jack and Lois' yard and the vehicles would be lined up including those of neighbors, friends and relatives stopping by for coffee, or just a visit. After Lois' passing Jack moved into the Lodge. He quickly adapted to new surroundings. Jack loved to help people and was often called upon to perform certain duties. He was President of the resident's council and enjoyed the card games, parties, dances, and entertainment. Jack was blessed to have so many lifelong friends and that circle grew to include residents and staff of the Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge and Bethany, and for that we are truly thankful. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife Lois; his son Bryon; his parents; his sister Daisy Eichhorn; brother-in-law Syl Eichhorn; brothers-in-law Ragnar Johanson and dear friend Emily Stinn. He is survived by his daughter Deb (Ivan); his son Dale (Shari); grandchildren Lindsay (Ryan), Carli (Colin), Taylor (Leanne); great granddaughter Jaryn; sister Betty Johanson; brothers and sisters-in-law Don and Lil Wakey, Bob and Helen Wakey; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and a special friend Margaret Lakeman. A Funeral Service will be held at the Alliance Community Church, Sylvan Lake on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Jin Woo Kim and Reverend Kevin Haugan officiating. Interment will follow at the Sylvan Lake Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Jack's memory to the Sylvan Lake Lodge Foundation.
