1914 - 2009
Mr. John Charles Richings passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Center, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the age of 95 years. John was born in London, England on July 25, 1914. He was one of eight children born to Jack and Elizabeth Richings. In 1937 John married Ivy Adams. He served in World War II for 6 1/2 years. During the war, John was stationed in England, Ireland and Normandy. After the war he and Ivy lived in London and John sold insurance for a living. John and Ivy immigrated to Canada in 1948. They sailed from England on the "Aquitania" arriving in Edmonton, Alberta in October of 1948. He and Ivy lived in Edmonton until 1956, when they moved to Red Deer. John's first job in Canada was driving a milk wagon. In 1951 John went to work as a salesman at National Home Furniture. After they moved to Red Deer, John worked for Sim's Furniture. He continued his life long career there until July of 2009. John loved to shop. Cars, clothes and unique eye glasses were his passion. He had a personalized license plate that read "tea 4 two" as he also enjoyed a good cup of tea. John cherished his role as Godfather to Tim and Tam Sinclair, a responsibility he handled with sincerity. John will be sadly missed by the Sinclair family, Swetman family, the staff of Sim's Furniture, as well as his numerous friends, colleagues, and customers. He was loved by all who have had the pleasure to know him. John was predeceased by his first wife Ivy in 1972, and his second wife Anna is 1995. "May heaven welcome our John, a true gentlemen"
A memorial service in John's memory will be celebrated at EVENTIDE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4820 - 45 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Doctor Fran Hare officiating. John will be interred in the Red Deer Cemetery, Red Deer beside his wife, Anna. If desired, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of one's choice.
