John GUMMOW

GUMMOW, John Delbert Mr. John Delbert 'Jack' Gummow of Red Deer, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Red Deer Nursing Home on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the age of 87 years. Jack was born on December 5, 1916 at Regina, Saskatchewan. After losing his father at the early age of three, Jack was raised by his mother and his step-father. They lived in the Springvale area until 1939. Jack married his wife, Sylvia on April 11, 1939. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served his country in World War II. After the war, Jack settled in the Penhold Community where he continued to live until his passing. He spent many years driving truck hauling cattle and grain. After that, Jack worked for Fletchers Packers for another number of years. Jack was very involved in and around the Penhold Community and for a time he served as President of the Sportsman's Club and was a member of the Lions Club. In his spare time, Jack was caretaker of the outdoor skating rink and he also enjoyed driving Lions Seniors Bus in his retirement years, taking them on outings when he was eighty years old. Jack will be remembered as a very kind, generous and gentle man who spent much of his life devoting himself and his time to helping others and his community. Jack will be very sadly missed but lovingly remembered and cherished in the hearts of his family and friends. Jack leaves to mourn his loss, his loving daughter, Yvonne and her husband, David Pyper of Cambridge, Ontario, his grandchildren; Jim, Trina, Rod, Darcy, Charlene, Kevin and David and his great grandchildren, Jordan, Billie and Michael. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sylvia in 1998, an older brother, Malcolm and a son, Gerald. Relatives and friends are invited to come and pay their respects one hour prior to the Life Celebration. A Celebration of Jack's Life will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapels, 4820 - 45th Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Bob Shields officiating. Cremation entrusted to the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. A Private Family Interment will be held at the Alto-Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta.
