April 2, 1925 - May 26, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Kokotailo, formerly of Red Deer, AB, on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the remarkable age of 100 years.

Jack was born on April 2, 1925, in Peterson, SK, to Barbara and Joseph Kokotailo, immigrants from Ukraine. He was predeceased by his siblings Walter, Emile, George, and Marie. Jack attended high school in Saskatoon, SK. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII. Afterwards, Jack attended the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained his Bachelor's Degrees in Math and Education.

It was at a church dance where Jack met his beloved wife, Edna (née Martyniuk), of 65 years. Jack and Edna married in 1949. Together, they moved to Alberta and raised their three children — Ron, Reena, and Robert.

With the support of Edna while raising their family, Jack embarked on an extensive teaching career, which took them to many small towns across Alberta. He most notably served as Principal of the Wetaskiwin Composite High School. The family then settled in Red Deer where Jack held several lead administration positions within the Red Deer Public School District, including Coordinator of Secondary Education, Coordinator of Instruction, and Director of Special Projects. During this time, Jack also completed his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Oregon.

Jack and Edna called Red Deer home for nearly 50 years. He strongly valued community, believing in the betterment of life for others. Following his retirement from education, Jack served as Alderman for Red Deer City Council (1969-1989), where he championed public health, libraries, and recreation, as well as the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area. Jack was also a longstanding member of Kiwanis.

Jack's retirement was rich and full. He and Edna took pleasure in traveling, RVing, and spending winters in Mesa, AZ. They had a large social circle and were both avid golfers and bridge players. Jack also enjoyed playing horseshoes and was instrumental in bringing the North American Championship to Red Deer. He was a lifelong crib player and enjoyed billiards well into his 90s.

Jack was a family man at heart. He immensely enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family at the cottage he built on the Little Red Deer River, recreating at Fairmont, gathering for dinners, going for walks, and playing cards and board games. In 2013, Jack and Edna moved to Calgary, AB, to be closer to family. Sadly, Edna passed away in 2015. He was also predeceased by one grandchild, Shawna "Rowan" in 2024. Jack is survived by his three children, Ron (Darlene), Reena, and Robert (samm); grandchildren Iori, Luke (Lisa), Rae (Suresh), and David; and three great-grandchildren, Bryce (Christina), Logan, and Liam. Also, the Kokotailo and Martyniuk families in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC.

Jack was admired and adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was actively involved and invested in their lives.

Jack was much loved and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Jack's family at www.MHFH.com. In living memory of Jack Kokotailo, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
