OMELCHENKO

1930 - 2009

Mr. John Omelchenko beloved husband of Min Omelchenko of Red Deer, Alberta, formerly of Bashaw and Drumheller, passed away after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 79 years. John was born on August 16th, 1930 at Wayne, Alberta to Andrew and Katherine Omelchenko. He was a dedicated, hard worker his entire life, at the age of 13 his father passed away and John helped support his family. He became the manager of Toshacks Shoe department for many years then he continued his education in Hospital Administration and was the Assistant Administrator of the Drumheller Hospital for seven years. From there he moved to continue his career as Hospital Administrator at the Bashaw General Hospital for 21 years until retirement. John also served and was the Commanding Officer of the Calgary Highlanders in the rank of Captain; under his command his unit won many awards. John met and married his soul mate of 51 years Min Bauer on August 2nd, 1958. Together they raised two children, daughter, Cathy and son, Greg. "Papa" was an avid gardener and was noted for his beautiful yard and gardens. His favorite pastime was to build his family "special projects" in his workshop all made with love. He was extremely proud of all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to watch his grandson Trent play for the New York Islanders in the NHL. He also took great pride in the fact that Tyler and Todd followed in his love of carpentry. John will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his wife, Min of Red Deer, Alberta, his daughter, Cathy (Stanley) also of Red Deer, Alberta, his son, Greg of Calgary, Alberta, grandsons, Trent (Teri) Hunter of New York, United States, Tyler (Angela) Hunter of Springbrook, Alberta, and Todd Hunter of Red Deer, two great-grand children, Madison Hunter of New York, United States, and Brayden Hunter of Springbrook, Alberta. John also leaves to mourn his loss his sister, Anne Kuzma of Calgary, Alberta, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Katherine, his brother, William, and two sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. A celebration of John's life will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 40 Holmes Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday November 6th, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jane Mitchell officiating. Interment will be held at Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta.
