John was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on September 9, 1935. He passed away peacefully in Red Deer, Alberta, after a short illness on February 27, 2024.
He was predeceased by his brother George and sister Mary.
He is survived by his partner Patricia Dyck of Red Deer, AB; his two daughters Cari (Ron) MacLean of Oakville, ON and Cindi (Jim) Vaselenak of Edmonton, AB; his stepchildren Dave (Susan) Nicholson and Kathy Reschke; and his brother Mike Vaselenak of Lethbridge, AB.
John enjoyed playing sports, in particular, baseball, basketball and broomball. He played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals minor league and later with the Lethbridge White Sox in the Western Canada League. He coached the Lethbridge Minors to the Canadian National Finals and later the Lethbridge Lakers.
John was a Major League Baseball scout for the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He loved to watch movies, especially westerns.
As John wished, a private memorial will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
