BAUMGARTEN

Lloyd Louis

1940 - 2014

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Lloyd Louis Baumgarten of Red Deer, after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the age of 74 years. Lloyd was born to Louis and Carmen Baumgarten on February 15, 1940 at Tisdale, Saskatchewan and he grew up in Carrot River, Saskatchewan. In 1961, after one year of teaching in Nipawin, he moved to Red Deer where he started his career with the Red Deer Catholic Regional School Division. Thirty-eight years later, he retired as Superintendent of the Division in 1998. His passion for education and his deep pride in the Red Deer Catholic Division led him to devote an additional nine years of service as a school board trustee from 2001 until 2010. Lloyd served in the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve. After thirty-two years of service, he retired in 1990 as the commanding officer of the 20th Field Regiment with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lloyd was a dedicated volunteer throughout his life. He spent countless hours volunteering for organizations such as: Central Alberta Theatre, Catholic Social Services, Parish Council, Hospital V.A. Association, Council on Aging, Red Deer and District Community Foundation, Michener Extendicare, and many more. Above all, Lloyd's main priority was always his family. He wrote that he wanted his family to remember him for his "total commitment to their care and security through unconditional love for each of them. Everything I did, I did for their benefit." He will be greatly missed. Lloyd will be lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty years, Ethel, and his children: Lisa (Gerry) Doll, Aaron (Carol) Baumgarten and Carmen Baumgarten (Colin Bergen), and by his grandchildren: Allison, Melanie and Matthew Doll; Lauren Grandy; Parker and Connor Baumgarten and Adlee and Finley Bergen. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers: Joe, Gene (Chris) and Dennis (Elaine), his Uncle Albert (Margaret), and many other relatives and friends. Lloyd was predeceased by his father in 1986, his mother in 2000, a sister Mary Lou in 2010, a brother Philip in August 2014, and his beloved daughter, Theresa Grandy in 1998. A Prayer Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 - 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, December 29, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Lloyd's honor may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta and N.W.T. at www.heartandstroke.com.
