Louis CABELKA

CABELKA Louis Cabelka of Bentley passed away on September 20, 2009 at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 98. He was born in Devol, Oklahoma on April 24, 1911 to George and Stella Cabelka and moved to Alberta with them in 1913. Louis attended school in Gull Lake, Bentley and Lacombe before studying as an electrician, machinist and welder at Calgary Tech, taking one program by day and the other in evening classes. As the Depression was in full force when he graduated, he supplemented farming with trucking, hauling oil and gas from Turner Valley. On January 21, 1937, he married Marion Nelson of Rainy Creek and together they had five children; Nelson David (deceased), Oran, Fredrik, Stephen and Sara. He lived most of his life in the Gull Lake district except for five years in Washington state during WW II. Throughout his life, Louis was involved in many community organizations, including the Gull Lake Mutual Telephone Company, the Blindman Valley Propane Co-op, The Blackfalds Rural Electrification Association, the Parkland Credit Union and Bentley United Church. At 80, he was made a honorary lifetime director of the credit union. In 1995, he was predeceased by his wife Marion after 58 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his sister Agnes Moore, brothers-in-law and best friends Max Moore and Gordon Beranek, as well as Marion’s brothers and brother-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was also predeceased by his dear friend Margaret Bos in 2008. He is survived by his sister Helen Beranek, his children and their families as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren, his Nelson in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held from Wilson’s Funeral Chapel 6120 Highway 2A Lacombe on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. Interment was held in the Bentley cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at the Lacombe Lodge and Continuing Care Centre for their loving care over these past years.
