TAYLOR Mabel Gladys 1915 – 2009 Mabel's birth certificate states she was born May 4, 1915 on Sec 33, Tp 5, Rge 21 W 3 at Claydon, Saskatchewan. She grew up on this homestead helping her father with his Veterinarian Service and delivering mail and farming. She got her driver's license as soon as she turned 16 and delivered mail by horses many times. John Taylor happened along and they were married December 26, 1938. The war broke out and John volunteered to serve in the army in 1940 serving overseas for four years. He only came home once to visit Mabel and his son. After the war in 1947, they packed up the horses and wagon and headed to Alberta to start farming east of Rimbey. It was here where they raised their family, three sons and two daughters: Ernest, Harold, Robert, Gladys and Evelyn. The first few years on the farm were hard with hail, frost and drought etc. There was no electricity or running water. Mabel drove truck during harvest time, milked cows, baked bread and incredible apple pies and cakes, washed clothes with a hand cranked washing machine then advancing to a gas driven Maytag. They retired from farming and moved to Sidney, B.C. in 1980 living there for seven years. They missed the nice weather of Alberta so packed up and moved back to Ponoka where most of their family resided. John passed away in 1996. Mabel then moved to Legion Arms in July, 1999 until December 2007. She got tired of cooking so moved into Rimoka Lodge where most of her friends resided, enjoying their company and all the activities. She became ill and was treated in the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre where she passed away peacefully on July 23, 2009 after a hard fought battle with Cancer. She is survived by her children: Ernie (Barbara) Taylor of Victoria, Harold (Mary) Taylor of Ponoka, Gladys Geertsma (Sidney) of Ponoka, Robert (Lorna) Taylor of Ponoka and Evelyn (Jack) Geertsma of Ponoka; grandchildren: Rick (Jennifer), Bruce (Sylvia), Ann (Brian), Michael (Tracy), Andrew (Ashley), Trina, Stacey (Thane), Josh (Tania), Jonathan, Jeffrey (Amanda) and David (Debra); great-grandchildren: Steven, Andrew, Justin, Adam, Kaden, Shontel, Vicky, Courtney, Calligh, Emma, Amy and Nate. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1996, son John Douglas, her mother and father, brothers Harold and Edward and sister Florence. A Funeral Service was held at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend David Schumacher officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Home Cemetery.
