Margaret was born June 26th, 1932, at the Trochu Hospital. She was the oldest daughter of Fred and Nell Schmierer. She was raised in the Elnora area where she attended school until high school. At that time the family moved to Carbon where she finished her formal education. She returned to the Elnora area when she married Fred Higginbottom in 1952. Together they farmed and raised five children. Fred passed away in 1974. She joined the staff at the Elnora Hospital where she worked for 20 years as a medical health record technician. During this time she welcomed an adopted daughter in 1975. Margaret married Darrell (Dude) Hughes in 1983 when they moved to their farm in the Trensille district. Margaret and Dude moved to Elnora in 2012, where they lived until her passing. Margaret always enjoyed community life and had many friends and particated in various groups and attended many events over her lifetime.
Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Darrell Hughes, her children Reg (Betty), Sue (Vic), Louie (Louise), Marge, Deb (Don), Lavonne (Dean). Her sister Gail, her step children, Darlene (Ron), Charlene (Curtis), Henry (Dawna), Leona (Tony), Pauline (Cliff), Byron (Brenda), Elvis. Sister-in-laws Gladys (Ray) Gail, Brother-in-laws Sid (Shirley), Monty (Bernadette). And many grandchildren, great grand-children, neices and nephews. She was predeceded by her parents Nell and Fred Schmierer. Her first husband, Fred Higginbottom, brother-in-law Jim Kenworthy, sister-in-law Hilda and husband Bert, and members of the Prescott family.
Special thanks to the staff of Three Hills Hospital and St. Mary's Care Centre at Trochu, to Sharon and Stu Doran and Dr. Chari. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held on Monday,s March 11, at 2:00pm at Elnora Community Hall, Elnora, AB.
